I’m enough of a twentieth-century boy to insist that the author not have tyranny over meaning, so take this with a grain of salt; but I think I was trying to move through the decline, inutility, and ludicrousness of communication/speech to land upon an affirmation of life in the absence of rhetoric.
Nabokov once remarked that all of his writing was about life after death, and whether I believe him or not I love knowing that, and it enriches his books every time I reread them.
